Murphy makes history by winning Montco judge seat
Democrat to join Republicans who won remaining six spots
Montgomery County voters made history Tuesday by selecting a Democrat as judge in a contested election.
Lois Murphy -- benefiting from name recognition earned in high-profile, albeit unsuccessful, congressional campaigns in 2004 and 2006 -- received the second-highest number of votes in the race to choose seven judges for the county. Republicans captured the remaining six spots.
''We demonstrated that the Democratic Party in Montgomery County is truly competitive,'' said Murphy, 46, of Lower Merion Township, adding she was delighted and humbled by her election.
Still, the party, buoyed by a recent advantage in voter registration, hoped to elect more than one Democrat in a year in which so many seats were up for grabs. The county's 19 judges are Republicans. When the new judges are sworn in, the county will have 23.
